Disseverment is a solid psychological debut with some fascinating ideas and some of the most intense and horrifying body dysmorphia I’ve encountered in fiction. The book is shocking and grotesque in all the best ways while not sacrificing storytelling.
I wish that Madelyn was a better developed character and that the relationship between Tyler and his fiancée was more convincing. The lead up to the ending also feels a bit disconnected from the rest of the story. While I loved the idea for the ending I didn’t quite feel as invested as I might have. Despite my hang-ups Disseverment is a fascinating story told with excellent prose and I’d very much love to read more by the author.
