Review
From the first time I laid eyes on Ravenous Devils, I thought, “Isn’t that just Sweeney Todd?” and I was terribly curious. And you know what? The game is exactly that, it is heavily inspired by Sweeney Todd in both the story and visual style, albeit with some twists.
The Mr. and Mrs. are all new characters and in this story, they are married and very much in love; a nice touch for folks who wanted a love story between Todd and Ms. Lovett. Instead of a barber, Percival is a tailor, and Hildred cooks more than just meat pies. The game cheekily implies that the building where the game takes place is the same one that belonged to the infamous barber.
The gameplay is deceptively simple but surprisingly difficult. You control both characters in two different shops and are tasked with juggling cooking, sewing, and murdering the patrons, it gets quite hectic. As you get upgrades, the game becomes increasingly more complex and challenging. The story is short, and you can easily grind out all of the achievements in just under 10 hours, at least if you play in a way that isn’t wasteful since you can only stockpile so much of each material needed to cook and make clothes.
The visuals and voice acting in this game were pretty great. I was surprised and kind of impressed with the gore in this game. I’m not one to be bothered by gruesome topics, but I genuinely was a little grossed out after the first time I watched Hildred cut some steak flanks.
The only downside to me was that the game was janky to control. You can’t set up a long list of commands like you can in games like the Sims, and sometimes I had to click an object more than once to get a character moving. Despite that, my overall experience was good. For a cheap little $4.99 game I feel that I got my money’s worth. It was entertaining for the time that I played it, and there was some delightfully dark humor in the writing.
