Synopsis:
The tranquility of a small Japanese town, covered in snow, is brutally disturbed by a heinous murder. The dismembered body of a high school girl named Mako Igarashi is found near a lake. Soon, Mizuki Aikawa, a student at the same high school as the victim, claims responsibility to the local police. However, as she relates the events, doubt gradually creeps into the minds of her lawyers. What heavy secrets did Mako and Mizuki share? This is the story of a struggle at the heart of the darkness of the human soul and its perversions. The author NON achieves a feat by taking us into her suspenseful story that is fascinating from start to finish, despite scenes of explicit, hyper-realistic physical violence, bordering on the sordid, but never gratuitous. Sensitive souls, move on...

Adabana is an intense psychological crime manga about two high school girls at the center of a horrific murder. Mizuki is a shy girl with a stressful home life that finds solace in her only friend, Mako. Together they’re just regular girls, but the story of their happy friendship belies an unimaginable darkness.
The story starts with the murder of one these two girls, and what follows is an investigation into what happened. The events that follow are filled with abuse, deceit, and perversion. Reading this manga felt like I was swimming in murky waters, with each revelation pulling me deeper into a disturbing mystery in which there are no true answers.
This volume hit so much harder thanks to NON’s striking art. There were panels of the manga that were both beautiful and terrifyingly grotesque. This first volume left me absolutely breathless.

“When Mako looked at me, I felt like I could do anything. Even if it’s covering up a murder.”
