Saturday Mourning Cartoons is a twisted love letter to golden era animated cartoons. The story follows an aging cartoonist whose life has come crashing down after his long running show has been cancelled to make room for newer more exciting series. What follows is a brutal story of revenge that was intensely satisfying.
It is very notable that the story is set in the 1990s, and I really appreciated the nod to this era in animation. As a late 80’s millennial I grew up during the big shift in animated cartoons, watching classic cartoons from the golden age like Tom & Jerry and Looney Tunes during a period of steady decline. Beloved characters were gradually replaced by the glorified toy commercials of the 1980s and the edgy and crass cartoons that became popular in the late 1990s. There was moral panic over these new-age cartoons with some parents fearing that their children were being brainwashed.
Aron Beauregard successfully captures this period of history and childhood nostalgia and mixes it all up to create a wonderfully original story. Although I found it to be mildly predictable the story was such a fun ride that I didn’t care. A bloody good time and easy recommendation.
