Review

L♥DK is a high school romance about an girl living alone and the class prince next door. It’s a fairly standard romance set-up with a cute boy, jealous girls, steamy flirting, and a little bit of drama. I can see why it was popular when it first released and why it was adapted to a live action film.

Unfortunately I found both of the main characters were bland. The main character doesn’t have much of a personality and I did not care at all for the main male lead. Flirting consisted of the male lead orchestrating a sexually suggestive situation and getting the main character flustered, rinse and repeat. Forced proximity is undoubtedly the main driver of the plot, and the romance moved too fast for my taste.

The 2000s art style and fashion are nostalgic for me so it was nice to go back and read one of the manga that I had missed from that era. If I had read this series when I was a teenager I might’ve been more invested, but unfortunately I’d just read so many better stories in this genre. I just found the first volume was fun but ultimately pretty forgettable, and I haven’t felt motivated to continue the series.
