Review
There has been a recent trend of games games that I’ve come to think of as “desktop simulation games” that I’ve been really enjoying. This particular format of storytelling is especially effective for the horror genre and I’ve been eating it up.
New Folder is a short mystery horror game exploring the desktop of a girl named Sue. The game is set in the summer of 1993, you learn a little about Sue and uncover a mystery about what happened that summer. I’m a late 80’s millennial and I have fond memories of learning how to use a computer and play my first PC games around that time period, so exploring a Windows 93 desktop and listening to all the sounds old computers was really nostalgic for me.
There are a few simple puzzles throughout and although they weren’t really a challenge, without any spoilers, I’ll just say that the way that they were implemented made for some clever effects. The game is really short and can be completed in under an hour. What’s happening becomes immediately obvious but the mystery was compelling nonetheless and the ending was chilling. No blood and guts here, but plenty creepy atmosphere and the story does get quite dark.
The game is worth checking out and the best part is it’s free on itch.io for those curious. Don’t bother watching the trailer and go in blind, enjoy!
