In this game, meet a mysterious girl who demands you use the "Anomalous Coffee Machine" and create any drink you can imagine. Whether realistic, paradoxical, or impossible, she’s willing to sample whatever you create. However, she doesn't seem to like the cup of death. Why? Well, I think you know.
Review
Anomalous Coffee Machine is based on a collaborative community driven writing project called the SCP Foundation, a fictional organization that secures paranormal and supernatural anomalies. The coffee machine in question is specifically based on SCP-294.
The premise of this game is simple, a mysterious girl named Horu asks you to type a word into the coffee machine, and see what happens when she drinks the results. The main draw of the game is the exploration, unlocking transformations for Horu. You can type almost anything into the machine, the catalog of words is impressive. There are literally hundreds of transformations packed into this game, ranging from sexy to horrifying. If you’re lucky, you might even unlock some nifty death animations and sex scenes. Oh yeah, did I mention that this is also a porn game?
There are a lot of little easter eggs hidden throughout the game. Trying to unlock all possible forms and animations is near impossible without using guides online. Some of the combinations are really not that intuitive and often require you to repeatedly feed Horu the same word. The excitement will wear off quickly and the game becomes pretty boring. Overall, the game is a bit of a curio and I can see why it has a fan base. The purple monochrome art gives the game a unique visual style that is memorable. The game itself is a novel concept even if it’s not super engaging.
I was however disappointed to find out that the developer, HoruBrain, had gotten into some hot water with the art community. Turns out that some of the art assets were traced from other artists. While they had apologized and removed the content that was flagged as stolen, they made the excuse that they were both unaware that they were infringing on other artists but also that they were paying tribute to said artists. These two statements are contradictory and makes the apology seem incredibly disingenuous. Finding out about this decreased my overall opinion of the game and turned me off from supporting this creator’s work in the future. I’m not too worried though because after looking at the developer’s website, their other projects seem really derivative.
