Review

Meatship is a psychological horror story set aboard cargo ship that has lost power, carrying the corpses of soldiers back home to Earth. Things look bleak for the skeleton crew trapped aboard the ship, with the overwhelming stink of death and decay clawing at their psyches.

I was amazed at how much world building was accomplished in this short, I wanted to read more about the future imagined in this story. The more I learned, the more fascinated I was, I was blown away.

Quote

“We all go a little space-mad sometimes. Especially here. Among the dead.”

About Sam Rebelein

Sam Rebelein holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College (with a focus on Horror and Memoir), a certificate of graduation from the Lubbock Area Square & Round Dance Federation, and that one trophy in The Last of Us Part II for when you beat the game on permadeath mode. Hard to say which of these is his greatest achievement.

Sam lives in Poughkeepsie, NY, where he writes spooky fiction and works as a Professional Tutor in the Writing Center at Dutchess Community College. His debut novel EDENVILLE was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award, and won a Wonderland Book Award for Best Novel. Sam’s recent collection of interconnected short fiction, THE POORLY MADE AND OTHER THINGS, is set in the same fictional upstate New York county as EDENVILLE; he also has a novel coming in Fall 2025 called GALLOWAY’S GOSPEL, which is set in the same world as well.
