Review
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has been my surprise obsession for the last week. This game wasn’t even on my radar, but my husband had seen it and downloaded the demo. After watching him play for 5 minutes I had to purchased a copy for myself. But what is it?
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is life simulation game in a similar vein as The Sims. You have an island that you can eventually terraform and decorate with a variety of objects. Build options are somewhat limited until you unlock the ability to draw objects (yes you read that right). The drawn objects stand out so much compared to the art style of the game, but it adds a quirky charm to an already quirky game.
Your island is populated by Miis, which are Nintendo’s customizable avatars. Each Mii will gain levels as you increase their happiness, which allows you to select from a variety of customization options including “quirks” and “lingo.” Quirks are animations that will change your Miis mannerisms, like how they greet others, how they walk, etc. Lingo on the other hand is exactly what it sounds like: you customize how your Mii talks. I was shocked that this game has no real filter on what you can type in, but I was really happy about this fact.
Your Miis will form friendships and you’ll get many silly mini events. There are a large variety of “events” to discover. Even if some scenarios replay a few times, the ability to customize so much keeps the game feeling fresh. All of the Miis on my island are friends and family, and I’ve had a blast creating custom characters with said friends and family that really represents them. The results have honestly been hilarious! The game is also very approachable for kids, my youngest has been obsessed with the game.
Overall, I love this game and can easily recommend it. It’s fun and funny and a great game to bond with friends and family.
