Review

When I went into this book I actually had no idea exactly what to expect because the original synopsis was extremely vague and didn’t give much hint as to what the story was about. I was pleasantly surprised that it turned out to be a vampire novel, the more monstrous kind too which I really liked.

Kacey is an average college student until she one day wakes up with strange powers. From there she is thrust into a world of danger, with vampires nipping at her heels. I would have liked for there to be more character development on Kacey’s part because in general she is a pretty standard chosen one protagonist. There is little that can stop her throughout the book, and this made the pacing feel rushed.

I think this book had some good ideas and it definitely has potential, but I feel like it fell back on tropes that were common at the time the book was written. The story started to get predictable after a while which was a real let down. The ending picks up a bit and sets things up for a sequel, but after ten years I’m not sure if this series will ever be completed.

I read this book early in my book reviewing days as a beta reader and when I was still figuring out what genres I like. I had since found that I didn’t care as much for paranormal romance as much as I thought I would, which contributed to my dislike of this book. It’s not a bad debut, and it may appeal to fans of the genre.

Quote

“I woke up the next morning with a start, squinting at the sun in my eyes. At least that’s what I thought it was. When I stood up, I went to grab a towel to go for a shower, and that’s when I noticed. My hand, it was, well, lit up like a frigging spotlight.”
