Review

Flesh Party is Jordan Thiery’s second themed short story collection, this time featuring a range of different monsters, both the classics and original creations. The characters in Thiery’s stories are complex, with feelings and motivations that I could empathize with. The stories are engaging and each new story is a treat, I really enjoy reading one story a night before bed.

Thiery is quickly becoming one of my favorite new writers consistently writing fresh and original stories with a high degree of polish. I’m fully on board with reading everything that he publishes. This is an author you shouldn’t sleep on!

Individual Story Notes:

A Green Dress in Tatters: A character drama set in an unusual and remote hotel with a mysterious painting. The protagonist’s spiraling narrative about the loss of his relationship, searching for the reasons that it all fell apart, leads the way in this story. The main character’s broken love story accurately portrayed some of the difficulties of dating in the modern age, and I thought that it was explored well.

Beneath the Skin: I didn’t know what to expect, but I really enjoyed this one. The main character gets wrangled into the annual boys’ camping trip with his brothers-in-law and their friends. The “male bonding” in this story was extremely toxic and it made me glad to be a woman. I had an inkling of what this story would be about, but I was pleasantly surprised by the ending.

Flesh Party: A serial womanizer gets his comeuppance in this shockingly gorey short. I loved the monsters in this story, and my goodness the ending was perfectly executed, I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days after I finished reading.

Under Thin Ice: This was easily my favorite story in the collection, without contest. The beginning of the story was unnerving, and I was immediately hooked. Coming of age grief horror with a snowy setting, and an aquatic monster beyond human understanding, this checked every single box for me. This short story touched my heart in every way, and there were times I teared up or felt stressed out with worry for the main character, Liam. I loved every second of this story, it is easily one of the best that I’ve ever read of this particular genre.

A Stitch in Time: This story was simply so much fun to read, I absolutely adored Grandma Mal and her battle with the strange creature haunting her family. I had no idea what to expect and I was so pleasantly surprised, it was easily one of the most fascinating family curse stories I’ve read.
