Synopsis:

Can you tell me how to get... out alive?

Johnny awakes. A puppet looms over his bed.

He recognizes the furry monster: Grandpa was its puppeteer on the children’s television show R-City Street. But Grandpa went missing a year ago. He disappeared from this very apartment building, which was converted from the old R-City Street studio.

Desperate to see Grandpa again, Johnny follows the puppet inside the building’s walls, ever deeper into a puppet-infested labyrinth...

Review

I Found Puppets Living in My Apartment Walls is a unique treasure in the indie horror space and a book that I think about constantly. The story follows a young man named Johnny, the grandson of a former puppeteer on a show called R-City Street. The show is a clear reference to Sesame Street, a hallmark of childhood for generations of Americans, myself included.

I grew up watching Sesame Street and The Muppets in the 1990’s and always found the puppets extremely creepy, especially Big Bird. Farthing captures the eeriness of muppets while exploring themes of grief and the loss of childhood. The story filled me with dread and reading it felt like a fever dream as Johnny ventured deeper and deeper into the walls of his apartment building.

Perfect for fans of grief horror, liminal spaces, “bigger on the inside” houses, and comic horror. It is a wonderful blend of genres, I haven’t read anything like it and nothing like it since.

Quote

“You spend your adulthood trying to craft a life that feels as safe as early childhood, but the world yanks you farther and farther away.”
