Synopsis:
The extreme horror event of 2024 is here!
YOU ARE ALL INVITED TO A PARTY IN APARTMENT 4!
Make sure you are hungry.
It's going to be crazy, in fact it's going to be crazy enough for someone to get sanctioned.
Marju is planning something, something big.
She loves a great party, with nice food, and party games, especially piñatas.
But with two meddlesome kids, and a dog that just won't stop yapping, it's taking the shine off her preparations.
This hard hitting book takes you down a rabbit hole, one that is NOT filled with beautiful things, and strange situations. This is filled with blood, excrement, and all forms of nastiness.
Come with us on a journey, a journey right into the centre of madness, but please leave a trail, just so you will be able to find your way back.
Marju is waiting
Review
Piñata is a deeply unpleasant book. The story follows Marju, a woman experiencing extreme psychosis, in the aftermath of a crime that has her going to trial. A police investigator is recounting Marju’s version of events while providing some play by play commentary throughout. The narration spirals out of control and after a while everything begins to feel like a fever dream and it pulled me in to the story.
Unfortunately I felt only lukewarm about the book, and not because of the content. I didn’t care for the narrative choice with the investigator, the additional commentary didn’t add any value to the story, and frankly the entire investigation piece could have easily been removed from the story and not much would have changed. All of the other characters outside of Marju were also very flat. I find it very hard to believe that blatant child and animal abuse especially at a work function would be ignored, and the implication that it was diversity policies that stopped any action from happening was quite offensive.
Despite my rating I don’t think that Piñata is a bad book and it will appeal to the right readers, especially those that enjoy fast paced no holds barred shock horror. Piñata is quite extreme even with and the list of content warnings is extensive, so proceed with caution.
