What a delightful and frustrating book, this series has become such a guilty pleasure for me to read. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before was such a delight because it introduces an understandable dilemma, and the reader follows Lara Jean as she clumsily falls in love with her first boyfriend. Drama ensues when another letter recipient shows up, and Lara Jean’s new squeeze Peter is still very close to his very jealous ex-girlfriend.
In this book we see Lara Jean come into her own more and it was refreshing to see. The friendships that she has with Chris and Lucas are also better developed and they are both characters that I have come to adore, I was happy to see that there was more of a friendly support system. Many of the plot developments were extremely predictable and I found myself sighing when my predictions came true, not because of the predictability but because of the events themselves. Relationships are messy, especially when other people are involved, and Lara Jean’s confusion and frustrations over Peter’s relationship with his ex-girlfriend are justifiable. It’s frustrating because it’s relatable.
It may seem obvious that Peter is being willfully ignorant for much of the book and I was screaming in my head at how annoying it was. I’ve also been that girl that had a boyfriend that was still either hung up or very close to an ex-girlfriend and it’s never turned out well EVER. It is for that reason I have to appreciate the writing because Jenny Han writes characters that are believable, and she shows the ups and downs of relationships which is nice to see in a romance.
Lara Jean is a compelling character and I want to see her happy. I like that the story is very much about her and the way that her feelings change and develop as she continues to foster new relationships with other people. I found myself genuinely feeling sad about John Ambrose McClaren, who really is wholesome and gets caught up in everything. You can meet the right person and develop feelings at the entirely wrong time, and it’s an unfortunate part of life. I devoured this book even faster than I did the last, and I plan to start the third and final installment in the series right away.
