Review

Once in a while, I like to take a chance on a self-published title and this one had an interesting premise. The main character finds out that her husband has been cheating and she decides to start escorting to earn money for the eventual divorce. This book is in dire need of a copy editor. Aside from the occasional grammar issues and typos littered throughout the book, you know that the book is still in the rough draft stage when, right in the middle of the action, the main character refers to her companion by a different name.

Sadly I couldn’t get behind the main character’s revelation about escorts and the men that purchase their services. The main character decides that men who purchase women for their bodies have more respect for women than casual hookups at bars, which is just dumb. First, there are plenty of women that go to bars for one-night stands and ditch men in the morning, it’s not one-sided. Second, in the world of prostitution, not every John is a nice guy. It’s true that some women enjoy the work, and in certain places, it’s legal and well regulated, but on the other hand there are many women who are either trapped by financial issues or are victims of human trafficking.

If all you’re looking for is one good spicy bedroom scene with a touch of romance, then this book will serve that purpose just fine. Everything else about the novel is pretty weak and the main character is kind of an airhead. I get it, her situation is horrible, I feel for every man or woman that finds themselves on the bad end of a damaged marriage with a cheating spouse, it’s heartbreaking. How she gets from point A to point B and her reasoning for going into escorting and loving it kind of puts her on the same level as her asshole husband. She tries really hard to justify her reasons for doing things but none of those reasons are good. What a surprise that her first customer is utterly perfect. He’s attractive, rich, and all for pleasing her, and it’s just too idealistic and so far from reality that it made me roll my eyes.

I got this book for free and so my expectations weren’t all that high, but I was still underwhelmed. While I was half curious as to know how the conflict between Julia and her husband plays out, it was not enough to purchase two more books when the problems with the first far outweighed the good.
