Synopsis:
When a pair of newlyweds purchase an old fixer-upper house, the worst thing they thought they would have to contend with was rusty pipes and peeling paint. They never imagined that they would first need to deal with a much bigger problem: they are being haunted by the old owners.

The New Owners is a quick, suspenseful short story about a husband and wife that find that their new home is not theirs alone. The story manages to pull of some genuinely good scares and delivers an engaging plot despite the short page count. A well executed take on the otherwise tired haunted house trope that doesn’t overstay it’s welcome. This story would be a great introduction for new readers to Jon Cohn’s work.
Quote
“Houses always made sounds at night, especially when they’re still settling in from new owners. But tonight every creak set her muscles tight, every rattle of the vents convinced her an intruder was trying to squeeze their way into her home.”
