Synopsis:
Things can change fast in Texas, especially the weather.
Uninvited and unwelcomed, Dan’s estranged mother Margo shows up at his doorstep moments before a freak snowstorm hits their small Texas town. The arctic storm comes fast and hard, trapping Dan and his wife, their teen daughter, and her boyfriend inside with the malicious old woman who seems hell-bent on destroying everything her son and daughter-in-law have built together. Long-buried family secrets are exhumed, causing tensions to flare and tempers to erupt. As things spiral out of control and anger consumes the household, inside is Hell. But outside in the snow there is something far more sinister. Something full of rage. Something violent. And that something has a taste for blood.

Dan’s estranged mother Margo shows up unannounced as a freak snowstorm rolls into town. Letting her in is crazy, hell would have to freeze over, and maybe it has. Tensions are kept high in this short and highly effective short story about toxic family relationships. Margo was frustratingly believable character that will gnaw on the nerves of readers that have experienced emotional abuse at the hands of a parent.
Just when I thought I knew where the story was going it took a hard turn into a direction that I didn’t expect. The story intensity of the second half of the novella reaches a fever pitch to deliver a truly horrifying scenario. I only wish that this story was longer and that I could’ve gotten more answers to the more mysterious aspects of the story.
A gripping read start to finish that kept me on the edge of my seat. I read this little short during a snow storm and it is a fantastically atmospheric read for the cold months.

“She had a deeply-rooted problem of pushing those closest to her as far from her as possible, refusing to allow herself to become attached, because deep down, she knew that attachment only led to heartbreak.”
