Bloody, nihilistic, and unapologetically girly, We All Rot Eventually was a fun romp that basks in the ugly side of fame. Alexa is an aspiring actress waiting for her big break and she’ll do just about anything to become famous. I really enjoyed the character work in this novella, Alexa especially, and all the detail about 2000’s fashion was nostalgic for me. This book was as funny as it was shockingly violent.
The first half of the novella was really strong and I flew through the pages. The plot started to lose me a bit in the middle, the writing became stiff as the story progressed. While there is a plot reason for why Alexa’s personality seems to disappear as the violence amped up, it made some of the bloodier scenes feel repetitive.
The ending ties everything together in a way that I found satisfying, it definitely takes a direction I didn’t expect. This is a story that is best experienced as blind as possible. Mia Ballard is a new writer that’s been blazing a trail and I’m excited to read more of her work.
