When the Mockingbird Sings is as extreme as extreme horror gets, featuring gratuitous on the page sexual violence. This book comes with strong warnings, and for good reason. A pedophile gangster gets in over his head and pays the ultimate price for his lasciviousness. The story is shocking to say the very least.
With two authors it’s hard to know exactly how much of each author was poured into this story and I think that contributed to my mixed feelings about the book. I’ve read and enjoyed books from both authors in the past and a few times I could see the swing from Bray’s brutal nihilism to Nickey’s tragic queer themes. Really the plot is all over the place and while there is a clear progression from crime to punishment, the tonal shift was jarring and the story overall felt disorganized.
Unfortunately this book was just not for me. The ending was satisfying, but the journey there was a slog to get through.
Quote
“In those last few seconds of silence… I heard the mockingbird outside once more. In that moment, I could swear it was mimicking my screams.”
