Review

No, I’m not a Human is a post-apocalyptic psychological horror game about a lone homeowner hunkering down as the super heats the planet. There’s safety in numbers, but not everyone that comes to your doorstop is human. Some of them are visitors, and it is up to the player to decide who to let in, and who to kick out.

It’s a social deduction game akin to games like Papers, Please as you talk to fellow survivors to learn their stories, listen for inconsistencies, inspect them for signs, and ultimately try to survive. This game oozes atmosphere, from the eerie visuals to the haunting yet soothing soundtrack that plays on repeat. Despite the repetition I was never bored of the sounds of this game, it added so much to the mood of the story.

As of writing this review there are over 60 different guests that can appear at your door, each with a unique appearance and personality. There are a few characters that will always appear but most others are randomly selected, ensuring that each playthrough will be a little different. There is a distinct air of paranoia with each new encounter, with each new (and sometimes unreliable) “signs” that you learn about to distinguish humans from visitors. There are some really funny character dialogues and quirks, and I had many favorites.

On top of the impressive cast of characters there are also multiple endings and many little secrets to uncover. There are still two I had yet to experience but all that ones that I had encountered thus far were fascinating, even if bleak. I was impressed with the sheer amount of content in this game despite it’s simple premise and presentation. I’d had my eye on this game since the demo blew up last summer and I was so thrilled when the final game was released, it was better than I expected. This has easily become one of my favorite games in recent memory and I can’t wait to see what this developer does next.
