Synopsis:

Elsie the vampire is three hundred years old, but in all that time, she has never met her match. This all changes one night in a bar when she meets Jimmy, a charming werewolf with a wry sense of humor and a fondness for running wild during the full moon. Together they enjoy horror films and scary novels, shady strolls, fine dining (though never with garlic), and a genuine fondness for each other’s unusual habits, macabre lifestyles, and monstrous appetites.

First featured as a webcomic series on Tapas, Fangs chronicles the humor, sweetness, and awkwardness of meeting someone perfectly suited to you but also vastly different. This deluxe hardcover edition of Fangs features an “engraved” red cloth cover, dyed black page trim, and 25 exclusive comics not previously seen online. Filled with Sarah Andersen’s beautiful gothic illustrations and relatable relationship humor, Fangs has all the makings of a cult classic.

Review

Fangs makes my little goth heart happy. It was a surprisingly down to Earth love story between a vampire and a werewolf that was just so wholesome I couldn’t help but melt a little. The book follows Elsie and Jimmy as they meet and fall in love through a series of one-page vignettes, keeping in line with Sarah’s signature comic style.

I adored the main characters, Elsie is quirky and morbid, while Jimmy is sweet and a little goofy. The book is filled to the brim with cheeky one-liners and terrible vampire and werewolf puns, and I couldn’t help but smile with each one. The art in Fangs takes full advantage of the medium, some of the comics didn’t even need any dialogue to deliver a clever punchline or sweet snippets of everyday love. Despite the jokes and supernatural dialogue and occurrences, Elsie and Jimmy live and love like normal adults.

I had hesitated to pick up Fangs but I’m glad that I finally did. Fangs retains Sarah’s signature silly humor while exploring mature love. It is nice to see Sarah move away from Sarah’s Scribbles and try something new. She is easily one of my favorite graphic novel writers and it’s nice to see her work grow and evolve while still remaining true to her style.
