This book was a reminder about how I should never decide whether or not I’ll read a book based on appearances alone. I had seen this book around at the library and never picked it up because it just wasn’t that appealing looking. I ended up reading it because a friend had loaned it to me and asked me to read it. I am so happy that she did, I loved this little graphic novel to bits!
Nimona is about a villain named Lord Blackheart and his shapeshifting sidekick, Nimona. They face off with Blackheart’s nemesis, Sir Goldenloin and the Institute. After the first few comics, I didn’t expect much of a story. Given that this series started as a webcomic, it gave me the impression that it would just be a comedic story about likable villains. While it was certainly very funny, the story ended up being so much more and I was pulled deep into Nimona’s story the more I read.
While I didn’t find it eye-catching at first, the art has a charm to it that grew on me the more that I read it. The cute, comical style is unique and memorable and gave the whole world a whimsical feel. I loved that the world was a crazy blend of medieval fantasy with futuristic science fiction. I was pleasantly surprised by this overlap of two wildly different genres, it made the world fun! I also ended up absolutely loving all of the main characters, but especially Nimona! This little graphic novel was exactly what I needed, it provided some laughs and a lighthearted adventure with some touching character relationships. I definitely want a copy of this for my shelves and strongly recommend it to everyone, it was just such a joy to read.
