Synopsis:

Anzu Murata snuck into the Mitarai residence under the guise of a housekeeper in order to ascertain the truth behind the fire 13 years ago -- a fire for which her mother took all the blame. Sneaking behind the back of Makiko Mitarai, the harsh second wife of her father, Anzu expands her search of the house up to the forbidden second floor. There, she meets a suspicious shut-in and, thinking to take advantage of him, she attempts to make contact with him. But because of a certain mistake, she brings down Makiko's wrath...!

Review

The series is heating up and boy was it a ride! Volume two took all of the momentum building up from volume one and set off running and it was great! Anzu’s sister Yuzu plays more of a role which is nice, as she is only briefly there in volume one. This manga also gives a little more information about Makiko and it was terribly satisfying that she’s still living under the shadow of the first wife. I could feel her struggle as a single mom and can understand the stress of being compared to someone else. It was nice that her character could be humanized a bit, despite how ghoulish she appears in some panels.

Seems I spoke too soon also on how nobody recognized the main character, they actually addressed it which was nice. The sons recognize the daughters, but I’m still surprised that Makiko is that dumb, but I digress. Anzu is shaping up to be a manipulative queen and I’m living for it. The wildly inappropriate romantic subplots developing are also fantastic, I honestly don’t know what way things will go. I’m so intrigued by the brothers and it’s clear that something terrible has happened in the years between. I really liked both characters, especially Kiichi, and I can’t wait to learn more in the next volume.

This manga is the domestic thriller that I’ve really needed to break a reading slump and I’m having so much fun reading. The last page of this volume left me on the edge of my seat!
