Synopsis:

Anzu Murata, assuming a false name, sneaks into the Mitarai household under the guise of a housekeeper in search of the truth behind the fire 13 years ago -- a fire for which her mother was labeled the criminal behind its outbreak. Makiko, the second wife of her father, Dr. Mitarai, receives Anzu into the house, and Anzu continues scouring the Mitarai home for clues behind the scenes as she gains Makiko's trust. With the cooperation of Makiko's older son, Kiichi, she closes in on the shared past between her mother and Makiko. Operating independently, Anzu's younger sister, Yuzu, reunites with their estranged father and presses him for help in determining the truth... but Makiko appears at the cafe where they're meeting!

Review

Please excuse me while I try to catch my breath because this volume has had me gasping for air! This volume seriously pulled the rug out from under me and I was screaming pretty much from chapter twenty-two onwards. This series is seriously everything and more dastardly than I could have ever dreamed!

Some of the investigation occurring in the background concerns mommy blogs and internet meet-ups, and while yes they absolutely still happen, it’s definitely not like it used to be with social media. This part of the story made me nostalgic. This volume unearths so much more about the family and explains how things got to be the way they are, as probably not a surprise, but the answer is a weak ass husband. The level of control that Makiko reins over the lives of all three men in her life becomes very apparent, and I frankly have to admire how viciously she has clawed her way to the top. She is the very definition of rags to riches, through any means necessary. I support women’s rights, but I especially support women’s wrongs.

At this point in the story, I have a pretty good feeling that I know who had started the fire, which would be a pretty big twist if it turns out to be the case. Also, I know it’s crazy, but gosh am I rooting for the two maybe romances in this story and I know that it will absolutely bite me in the ass for hoping for it. I’ve been binging this series for literally hours now, it’s compulsively readable and it’s only gotten better and better.
