Review

Creepy Cat is a curious little manga that combines two things that I love – goth subculture and cats. A young lady inherits a creepy old mansion and discovers that it is inhabited by a creepy cat. The cat really is a true nightmare pet, diabolically mischievous, creepy cat is ghoulishly cute.

Valent has a gorgeous and unique art style that is clean and visually striking, it is easily the strongest point of this series. I absolutely adored the creepy cat and the funny ways he is drawn. Unfortunately, I didn’t really care for the other characters in the series, and some of the recurring jokes around them got tiresome. The plot is bare-bones and the series is really just a series of light-hearted short comics about cat ownership with a slightly spooky twist. Some are extremely funny, but they can be a bit hit or miss.

The tone of the manga is juvenile so it will appeal more to middle-grade readers. Near the end, I was getting kind of tired of reading it, but my daughter and husband absolutely adored the manga, so we will almost certainly continue the series. Hopefully the future volumes can provide a little bit more, otherwise I can see this series quickly becoming repetetive.

Quote

“Can’t believe there’s a cat here… Sure is a creepy one. I wonder if we can be friends. He’s cheeky, mysterious, and totally abnormal! But so soft and floofy!!”
