Review

The premise of this manga is… Troubling. Yua is a high school girl living with her grandmother after the death of both of her parents. Forced to take care of herself after her grandmother is hospitalized, she begins a secret relationship with her homeroom teacher, eventually marrying him in a secret ceremony. Already in a complicated situation, it turns out that her new husband had neglected to tell her that the most popular boy in school, her classmate Subaru, is also his son.

It doesn’t take a genius to put together that Yua is vulnerable and what her teacher is doing is grooming her. His actions and motives are far from charitable. How convenient that he can capitalize on the death of Yua’s last guardian during a vulnerable grieving period to marry her and move her in with him. That the only thing stopping him from sleeping with her is that she’s his student. Nevermind his son’s feelings, he even becomes jealous of his own son and puts that emotional baggage on Yua. It doesn’t matter that he is a young father, all of his actions are predatory.

The manga moves quite fast and a love triangle is inevitable with this set up. Though I like Yua and Subaru, they have good chemistry and fall into the brooding boy and rowdy girl dynamic. The entire situation is just uncomfortable. The art is great, and I’m moderately invested in the story, if only to see how the situation will be resolved and if the manga will even attempt to deal with the obvious issue of a teenaged main character dating a teacher.
