Review
Why was I so glad to see Maeda return in this volume!? That’s the biggest question of all. But in all seriousness, this volume got really intense. The rivalry heating up between the three quints with crushes, and the fact that they’re sisters, obviously puts Futaro in a very awkward position. I can understand how he might feel backed into a corner, which would overwhelm someone dealing with romance for the very first time. I felt so much relief with the way that the groups ended up being split. Futaro really is the best harem hero compared to the ones in other series.
Also, this volume crept up and ended up making me cry a little, probably because I’m an Ichika fan. I should clarify that I never rooted for her to end up with Futaro in the end, but as a character, I absolutely adore her. Betyrals are inevitable in harem stories. The saying is true that love can make you crazy. Love hurts, and falling in love can bring out the absolute worst traits in a person. I appreciated the message here about never losing sight of the sister(s) that you treasure. I’ve heard and seen enough sad stories about best friends or sisters that hurt each other by going after each other’s partners. I’m not mad at Ichika, Miku, or Nino at all because the way they all acted is very human, but it doesn’t make it any less sad. Additionally, lies and manipulation are toxic to relationships, and once trust has been lost, it is extremely difficult to get it back. This story arc was an incredibly tough one, but it is a hard lesson that often gets forgotten in modern romance. The way that every character, especially Ichika, tried to make things up to each other shows incredible character growth.

“I suddenly felt like I wasn’t good enough. There’s no way Futaro would like someone like me. I never imagined it would be this scary to fight fairly.”
