Review
It just occurred to me that there are a lot of single dads in this series. But also, this volume had some high and low points. For high points, we find out a lot more about Fotaru’s past, we learn a lot more about Yotsuba, and the big sisterly fight was really dramatic. On the downside, the entire scene playing house and later the changing room mix-up were kind of stereotypical; I’ve read enough manga to be tired of these types of forced romantic interactions. Even though it’s only the end of volume five of fourteen, I’m all but certain that I know who the bride is. In case I’m correct in my assessment, and you want to avoid spoilers, stop reading here.
…But I’m pretty darn certain that it’s Yotsuba. Even though her appearance and role in many scenes make her a background character, she is absolutely the one. Itsuki is a big old red herring because readers of harem manga are used to front-and-center “vaniLLa personality” type characters like her being the eventual love interest. All the main character things that Itsuki does, namely, being a role model for her sisters, acting as a foil for the hero, and caring about Futaro’s sister – these are all things that Yotsuba does too. Also, Yotsuba and Itsuki are also the two most visible characters on volume one’s cover. Yotsuba displays characteristics of each of her sisters: Itsuki’s nurturing and desire to set a good example for others, Nino’s outgoing personality and dedication to her sisters, Ichika’s playful and non-confrontational attitude, and Miku’s lack of self-confidence and tendency to make sacrifices for others even when it’s to her detriment. All of these traits make Yotsuba a surprisingly nuanced character that many will overlook because of her genki girl demeanor. I could be wrong, but my intuition tells me that I’m correct.
