Review

This series is finally starting to get good, and this volume is the strongest by far. The beginning was odd with the appearance of Rena, who is obviously one of the quints in disguise, and I’m pretty sure I know which one it is. Despite this, the rest of the volume was really good. Nino really shines in this volume, with a fair amount of character development. I didn’t care for the silly Kintaro subplot and I’m glad that it was resolved quickly. I do take issue with the fact that she drugs Futaro for a second time. Even if it’s probably just sleeping pills, it’s a really gross way to move the plot along, and it’s a weird choice on the part of the author for what is otherwise a fairly wholesome series.

The pacing of the story also seems to have improved. It was, at times, a little too fast in the earlier volumes, which made things feel messy. As has been the case in the rest of the series, the characters spend more time on their personal conflicts than actual studying and always end up needing to crunch right before exams. Despite that, it was nice getting to see their steady progress through exam scores. It’s a joy watching these characters grow together and to see Futaro come out of his shell and start softening up toward others. He really is a great main character for a harem series. A tough older brother type that pushes the quints to better themselves but also to remain together. I am intrigued about the quint’s father, who has not been present up to this point, but his importance in the plot was alluded to in an earlier volume. I’m cautiously optimistic about the rest of the series and hope that the good pacing keeps up.
