Lights out.

It’s bad enough that its venom-dripping chelicerae can slice through flesh like warm butter. Worse? It’s right there under the bunk. It’s a fact now. To make it through the night, the children must obey the rules: don’t get out of bed, stay out of the shadows, and don’t wake the beast. But as the threats multiply, so do the rules of survival. And with the safety of dawn still hours away, the fun is just beginning.

Get the Book: Amazon

Review

This was a silly little short story about the wild imaginations of children having a sleepover. They come up with increasingly complex rules that they have to abide by, like staying out of the shadows or avoiding mirrors. There is a whimsy element to the story that will make the reader wonder if this is all imagination or if there is something paranormal occurring, which added to the story’s charm.

The story reminded me of when I was a kid, and I used to chant Bloody Mary into a mirror with my friends. I was a jumpy kid that was easily spooked, so much so that I’d often run down hallways and jump onto my bed afraid that shadows were nipping at my heels. So I can definitely get the game that they were playing because I played them too, though the story got a little overly silly as it went on.

There are heavy Harry Potter references throughout the story which in 2022 will be highly divisive. The kids in the story are all into Harry Potter and that’s understandable in creating a sense of time. It’s cute for Potterheads that grew up reading the books and watching the films, I was one of them, but it won’t be an appealing aspect to some readers.

Overall I found the story to be okay, perhaps I’m just too old, but it’s the kind of story I can see my kids really enjoying.

Quote

“Who the hell put that spider there?”

About the Author

About Edgar Cantero

Edgar Cantero is a Spanish writer and cartoonist working in Catalan, Spanish and English.
