Round 9
What's your go to spice or seasoning when it comes to eating or making foods?

My answer
So I haven't lived in the south (Southern Alabama region) for very long... maybe about 7 years now, and when I came down here I was introduced to Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning. There are other variations but for this game sake we'll go with the original. I honestly don't like a lot of spice or hot spice or anything in my foods, however, since I've used Tony's in my everyday cooking it became one of my favorite things to use. It has a mixture of flavorable spices together, that can used to season anything really. Salt, Red Pepper, Black Pepper, Chili Powder with Garlic Powder. We honestly don't cook with out it.

I use lowry’s seasoning salt in everything, whether I’m just seasoning fries or if I’m prepping stuff to be cooked. I don’t know why, I just vibe with the flavor a lot and it really hits the spot - plus it just seems to go good with everything. I’d like to branch out and try actual rubs because the flavors are so interesting to me, but I’m a stickler for keeping things the way they are if they taste good. Maybe someday!

me, trying to think about one universal Spice i generally go to

i...don't really have one? unless you count salt and pepper, but that's a given for any food. oh and MSG!! i love MSG.
it's not that i don't season my food (the opposite!) but it just really depends on the dish. i think the ones i use the most are gonna be like cumin, paprika, ancho chili powder, garlic, coriander, cilantro, chipotle peppers... i do use cocao as a savory seasoning sometimes (a given in mole, but i also put it in chili and stuff like that). but like tonight i used celery powder, sage, thyme, and onion powder so it really depends on the mood!

a niche go to for me is tajin, though! it's not used in cooking, but i can't eat certain fruits without it or something similar (i recently got some that used chipotle chili powder, and i'm hooked on it. i love putting it on melon, mango, cucumber, or even gummy candy. even better if you have chamoy too! i carry a little bottle of tajin with me everywhere because i get so sad if i can't put at least salt on watermelon, so i have to be prepared so i'm never caught off-guard.

I definitely use spices, but I don't have any that I am like "this one is the best" and I def dont have too many spice blends. I have a creole spice blend my aunt made, which is cool.

But I am obsessed with soy sauce. I always add a little in dishes, and I own so many types or variants. My husband hates it, dark soy sauce, sweet soy sauce, thin soy sauce, mushroom sauce, vegan fish sauce, low sodium soy sauce, and then all the soy based pastes (gochujang, miso, etc) I dunno, I guess lots of my flavor in dishes are coming from other stuff, like maybe a splash of beer to deglaze a pan, caramelize some tomato paste, and lots of green sriracha on my tacos.

My go to had always been Garlic. I used it on so much. However, when we had to start cutting back on salt in our overall diet, we tried out this Mrs Dash Garlic Blend and it has now been our go to seasoning for everything. It's so flavorful and seems to have just the right combination of different seasonings.

Definitely black pepper. And garlic powder. I'm not a big fan of salt, except on the obvious things, like french fries, and even then there is definitely a limit to me. I just got a burger and fries from Five Guys tonight and the fries were WAY too salty! :( I appreciate a bit of salt, but not that much!

Garlic powder, I put on a lot of things, even on pizza! And black pepper, too... Especially on eggs. I even put crushed red pepper on a lot of things, especially certain kinds of pasta dishes and pizza, also.

I FEEL YOU HERE.

I don't have a go to spice either, I like spices in all my stuff! Would chilli count? Not chilli powder, but like, chilli sauce/freshly cut chilli. That might be the closest I can think of!

Salt!!! I'm an American hsfkjhsjkf but yeah like everyone else it really depends on the dish, but salt and pepper are classics for a reason. I'm also very into garlic as most people probably are haha. I guess it'd be easier to say what kind of seasonings I DON'T normally use, which would be anything spicy, I'm veryyy bad with spice so if I do ever make a spicy dish it's at the minimal spice level possible.
