Round 1
What is a food from your childhood that brings you good memories?

My answer
One of my favorite foods that my mom used to make when I was little is a Filipino soup called Tinola. It is a ginger soup that is cooked with chicken, onion, and moringa leaves, usually served with a side of white rice. I used to love the soup and the tiny leaves that she cooked them with, they were so cute! Being a picky elementary school kid I tended to ignore the chicken, and just pour the broth with little green leaves over my rice. I didn't know the name as a kid, so I would always ask my mom to make me some "juicy rice"! I didn't find out the name until not too long ago actually.

One of my abuelas is from Andalusia, and the other is Zapotec and Purépecha, so I grew up eating a lot of Spanish and traditional Mexican food. Pozole is a family favorite soup so I really associate it with family. Sopa de albondigas is really comforting and nostalgic to me, and it's one of the foods I crave when I'm not feeling well. There also hasn't been a single year where I haven't had tamales on Christmas, so it's one of those traditions that is a constant in my life. As for Spanish food, tortillas de patatas is THE Spanish nostalgia food for me! My Spanish abuela used to prepare it every time I visited, and she'd make it to take on picnics and outings because it's still good cold. I actually only found out kind of recently that tortillas de patatas is an acceptable name for it, because my abuela just calls it "tortilla". I only differentiated between it and corn/flour tortillas by pronunciation (Spanish vs Mexican accent). My dad and I even made it once for my 6th grade English class; we had to write a little bit about a family recipe, and then bring it in to share with the class. It wasn't very popular sadly, but that just meant I got to take it home and share it with my friends who weren't in my class.

My mom's family is from Texas, so I actually grew up eating grits, which is a porridge made from boiled cornmeal. I can eat them plain, but I also want to try adding eggs, and butter. It's just a meal I have enjoyed since then.

White rabbit candies, but specifically only the original flavour milk ones. I recently found out that there were other flavours but only the original flavour brings back memories ;;

I think they have white rabbit bubble tea too, I've never tried because every time I've seen it the queue has been INCREDIBLY long. I've also heard they have white rabbit milk tea, prepackaged? But I haven't tried that one either.

Homestyle bakes - Creamy chicken and biscuits.

Growing up my family never really had that much money so we never really made fancy dishes or anything so the fact that these came at a moderate price and all it required was chicken and vegetables made it easy to cook, and you got a nice sauce, and biscuits. Im not entirely sure why I was so drawn to it, but I know that I always ate way to much of it and could eat as much as I want and still be good to go for more. Also one of the things that inspired me to try cooking my own foods. Im also glad I got to eat this, because they discontinued the product and now you can only get them from amazon (and more than likely they're expired).

When I was much younger, whenever we went to see my grandfather, my aunt used to make us these treats that looked like those doilies that you decorate end tables with. I never had these anywhere else, but they were always sweet and looked like she spent so much time making them. We helped out with my grandfather's farm a lot and these were always waiting for us when we came back inside. It wasn't until much later on that I learned these were called Pizzelles.

My grandma's Christmas cookies. She still makes them, but not as much because, obviously, she is getting older. The taste, smell, and look of her Christmas cookies just brings me back We used to go over her house as kids and "help her" make them (we'd really just try to eat the dough and the baked cookies as they came out of the oven as much as she tried shooing as away) LOL. We'd send in the youngest, "most innocent" sibling (my sister) to steal a few for us and bring them back HAHA. But when she brought them over to our house for Christmas, we always wanted dessert first. <3

@Ace - We can try making some creamy chicken and biscuits at home! I know it'll never be the same as Homestyle Bakes, but we can try until we find a recipe that you like! <3

@Caitlin - Christmas cookies are so wonderful, my brothers and I used to make homemade ones with my mom every year. Now that I'm a mom of my own and finally have a house I'd like to start baking them with my little ones! It's such a wonderful sugary holiday!

Survey (Round 1): jerkchicken20, pretzeldog10

@Elijah - Mexican and Spanish cuisine is so delicious, so lucky! Sad about the class reaction to the tortillas de patatas, I can relate with similar experiences growing up in America in a mixed household. When I'd bring my filipino snacks to school like shrimp chips the other kids would look at me like I was crazy.

Survey (Round 1): sushi08, peanut08

@Kayori - I have never had grits before, but I love corn, I'll put it on my list of things to try sometime!

Survey (Round 1): empanada05, seasalt07

@Loki - I had to look up the cookie but those look absolutely divine! Your grandma sounds like such a sweet lady!

Survey (Round 1): bluecheese11, trifle03

@Mysti - White Rabbit yes!! I spent a lot of my childhood in Hawaii and there were a lot of Filipino and Japanese kids living in my neighborhood that I hung out with. All of us used to lose our child minds over white rabbits!

My mom made this goulash in my childhood that would have that W sauce, pinto beans, ground beef and some other ingredients. I've tried finding similar recipes since our estrangement, but nothing is quite like it. It had a great sensory input, so I find myself wanting it ever so often.

So I have memory issues and what I can remember of my childhood years is... spotty at best.

But I do remember a few things from kindergarten. Shrimp cup noodle (I was always fascinated with how they got the shrimp so small) and the tamale's a friend's mom would make. We lived in Califronia at the time and they were proper homemade tamales and I still remember they were delicious.... once I learned how to eat them. Yes I did try to eat the corn husk... at least once.
