    Through the Woods

My Review: I’ve read a lot of horror, ones that were bloodier and more disturbing than this. Yet those novels and graphic novels didn’t affect me the way that this one did. Through the Woods is a collection of horror comics that hearkens back to the creepiest fairy tales. The atmosphere in the novels is not to be understated, the stories and art are chilling, even when the stories are straightforward and can be predicted. Even the introduction and the conclusion, brief as they were, evoked feelings of dread cover to cover. I found myself feeling uneasy, particularly while reading the first story, Our Neighbor’s House. My favorite easily was…

Brief, Horrible Moments: A collection of one sentence horror stories

My Review: I couldn’t resist a unique idea when I stumbled on this little book, a collection of one-sentence horror stories that are meant to leave the reader wondering what happens next. I didn’t have very high expectations given the concept, but I figured it’d be an amusing short read and it was at first. Some of the earlier stories were not bad, and could easily work as a writing prompt. The vast majority unfortunately were utterly forgettable. Little Moments of Love

My Review: For those unfamiliar with Catana Comics, it’s a web comic about the artist and her relationship with her boyfriend. It’s another series that regularly makes its rounds on social media, which I imagine is where most people have seen it. To say that this comic is sweet is an understatement. It is 100% relationship cheese that will be either #couplegoals or gag-inducing depending on the audience. It’s clear that Catana and John are very much in love and they’re extremely cute together. The comics, like the art, are simple. The title pretty much sums up the entire series in general as each strip is like a small snippet…

    Heart Berries

Warnings: Sexually Explicit Content, Violence, Abuse My Thoughts What an outstanding memoir, Heart Berries was unputdownable and is one of the few books that I would honestly read again. Terese’s prose is precise and strikingly beautiful even when she is talking about difficult topics. I read the book over the course of a day at work and I was fully absorbed in the author’s story. This book was a lot of things. It is a book about reckoning with mental illness and childhood abuse, about motherhood and her struggle to maintain personal relationships, about finding an indigenous voice that is authentic to her. Heart Berries is short but tells a…
