Review

Hush, My Darling is a thrilling backwoods novel filled with drama and romantic suspense. An American woman traveling in Ireland to explore her father’s homeland finds herself stranded deep in the mountains and rescued by a strange family. The danger of her situation is immediately apparent and much of the plot is driven forward by the main character’s naivete which I’ll admit could be annoying at times. I could forgive this however as the mystery was enticing enough to keep me invested.

The pacing is lightning fast, with short snappy chapters that made the book compulsively readable. The story builds up to a chaotic ending that left me gobsmacked, and I had so much fun along the way. A solid book about the horrible violence of patriarchy and abusive family cycles.

This book has also turned me into a Leigh Kenny fan, its easily her best work. While I didn’t like her debut Cursed this book completely changed my opinion of her writing, Kenny has really come into her own as a writer and I can’t wait to see where her career takes her.

Quietly Through the Trees: My edition of Hush, My Darling came with a companion novelette and let me tell you, it was just as thrilling as the main story! This short is a sequel that answered lingering questions and it was spine tinglingly chilling.

Quote

“As the naked light bulb see-sawed over her head, she forced herself to focus on the spot where the paper curled just so. That was where she had hidden herself. They wanted to break her, body and spirit, and she knew that they were probably much closer to achieving their goal than they realized, but still, she needed to keep a little piece of herself safe from their dirty, calloused hands and hot, putrid breath.”

About Leigh Kenny

Leigh was born and raised in the beautiful garden county of Wicklow, Ireland. She is the mother and proud protector of two wonderful boys, a black Labrador, and a three-legged cat that hates people. Her partner James is also part of the family, but she’s not his mother, so he gets his own sentence!

Leigh has a fierce love for all things morbid and macabre, and like many of her peers, she’s a horror junkie! She cites Ronald Malfi, Kealan Patrick Burke, and of course, Stephen King, as her most favoured authors and sources inspiration.

Cursed is Leigh’s debut, and though she hides it well, she is very proud of herself.
