Review

Rural Decay destroyed me. It is an emotionally powerful piece of transgressive extreme horror about a boy and the father he looks up to. When young Jack discovers that his father is a violent serial killer he is shocked but also intrigued, and eventually brought into the fold as his father’s protégé. What followed was a story of unimaginable depravity that went in a direction that caught me off guard. I had thought that I had read this type of story before, but I was so very wrong.

This was my first Jason Nickey book and I fell head over heels in love with his prose, it was shockingly beautiful despite depicting evil people committing abhorrent acts. While the book is quite violent but never too over the top. The book lives rent free in my head and is one of my favorites in the genre.

Quote

“Whether it was cleaning the house, working on his truck, or running errands, we did everything together. It only seemed right that we do this together too.”
