Synopsis:

While adjusting to a new work assignment in rural West Virginia, Jake Bailey begins to notice a strange man in a creepy yellow truck following him. As time goes on, the frequency of his encounters with this man continue to increase until, one day, he finds himself tied to a chair in the man’s shed. What follows is a nightmare beyond anything his imagination could conjure, and an outcome even Jake himself would never have expected.

From the mind of Jason Nickey comes another twisted tale of Rural Decay.

Review

I didn’t think that it was possible to love a sequel more than as much as I loved Rural Decay, but Past Due: Rural Decay II was a much needed balm for my soul. Where Rural Decay broke my heart, Rural Decay II healed it. Rural Decay II is less of a direct sequel and more of a spiritual successor. The throughline between both Rural Decay books are that they are essentially stories of twisted love in the cruel backwoods.

The narrator finds himself on the wrong side of a holler and ends up at the mercy of a terrifying captor. I truly could not predict the direction that this story would go, and with every shocking turn I went through a whole gamut of emotions: fear, heartbreak, joy, anger. It tugged at my heartstrings and I loved the main characters.

This book cemented my admiration of Jason Nickey’s work. I never know what I’m going to get when I pick up his books, they always keep me on my toes and racing through the pages.

Quote

“Henry’s family was an abomination, but humanity itself can be the real monster.”
