The Harvesting is a blood-soaked coming-of-age horror novel centered on the son of a cult leader torn between his family legacy and the girl he loves. I love a good cult book, and The Harvesting combines elements of folk horror, cosmic horror, and religious horror all wrapped up in one vicious little novella. The book is fast paced and easy to knock out in one sitting.
I was really fascinated by the cult in this story and was at the edge of my seat the entire way through. When things heat up near the end of the book I’ll admit I felt a little more lukewarm about some aspects of the more supernatural elements of the plot. However, the ending left me flabbergasted, and I liked that the book went in a different direction than what I expected.
The Harvesting felt like a summer blockbuster that I could gobble up with a bucket of popcorn, it was wildly entertaining. Timothy King is a solid writer and one of the nicest authors on the planet. I’ve enjoyed every book that I’ve picked up that he’s written and I’ll continue to support his career.
