Review
High school romantic comedy? Demonic supernatural horror? Alien science fiction? Dandadan is all three of these genres wrapped up in one chaotic anime. Each episode is bursting with pure frenetic energy and filled to the brim with ridiculous hijinks and story beats that reminded me of series from the 90s. It was both a serious anime, and a very unserious one, and that honestly made it so fun.
I fell in love with both main characters right away and I loved the unexpected friendship that forms between Okarun and Momo. On the surface they seem like opposites, only to find that they are both huge nerds about different things, and I really liked that dynamic. I truly did not know what to expect from each episode, and each one was a new adventure that surprised me. Some episodes had me laughing, others terribly worried, and at least one had me in full blown tears; it was a roller coaster of emotions but I couldn’t get enough.
I binged this season upon release and it was the most engaged I had been in an anime series in a long time. I’d like to get to reading the manga and watch the newer seasons soon. This was my favorite anime last year and I’m so glad that I took a chance on it.
