Review

I liked the complicated dynamics of the friend group and how each of the character responds to this situation. From Shin’s hesitation causing him to miss opportunities, Shuugo’s emotional intelligence and goal of playing the long game, amd Airu’s choice to remain a friendly supporter. This volume seals it for me that I like every character except for Kizuki. The more that he pushes Mizuho the more anxious that I get. He’s desperate, controlling, and manipulative. He definitely is the one character with the most growing up to do when it comes to love, and it makes me wonder if he’s truly the end game. It worries me because he is the one character that appears on the most covers for this manga, even more than Mizuho.

The character writing in this manga is surprisingly good, and I like how it illustrates the pitfalls of friends-to-lovers scenarios. For Mizuho, all roads lead to heartbreak for one or more of her friends. I don’t blame her for wanting to hang on to her friends for as long as she can. She knows that she wants to be with her friends forever, which is leading her to feeling confused about Kizuki’s aggressive attempts to win her heart. In reality, there is no reason that she has to “choose” any of them.

Volume three really lays the groundwork for the rest of the series, with all four friends revealing their feelings to the reader, but not playing their hands. I also find it curious that the pandemic isn’t really mentioned in this volume. While I’m not expecting everyone to mask up, there are folks that were slow to take the pandemic seriously. It’s already Fall 2020 and nothing out of the ordinary has occurred otherwise, so I’m curious to see how the COVID-19 story plays out. Though I have a sneaking suspicion, because a certain character was mentioned in the first volume as having asthma that this story will be a tragedy.

Quote

“If I seriously came face to face with the person I like, our current relationship would probably be destroyed. I’d rather be friends. I… Want to be by their side forever. I’m happy just to watch over them.”
