Volume two shifts focus away from the main character’s story and centers on the two side characters introduced near the end of volume one, Ashima and her half sister Sakura. Ashima is a lonely girl dealing with feeling like she doesn’t belong. Living in a small town where everyone knows the local gossip truly is hell. The reason that she acts out and suffers academically make sense, and I appreciated how the manga attempts to explore complex themes about family. I still don’t like the weird romantic tension between half sisters, and I hope that this aspect of the story is resolved in a way that isn’t gross.
I think it’s interesting that the synopsis makes no mention of the Ashima and Sakura story, despite taking up a majority of the volume. Mayumi, Rin, and Hinata are relegated to supporting characters. Mayumi falls a little too fast for my taste, having only been in the town for a week before discovering that she’s “in love.” The ending ends the same way that volume one does, with the full introduction of a troublesome character from Mayumi’s past. The villainess has arrived, and I’m curious to see how this new story thread plays out.
